Research conducted by Corporate Research Associates in August 2016 confirms that a strong majority of Halifax residents (83 percent) support the current and ongoing efforts involving Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Shaw Group and the city to acquire a large portion of the Purcell’s Cove Backlands (379 acres) in public ownership for future recreation and programming.
The fact that support is consistent across community and other demographic segments across Halifax Regional Municipality is of significant importance.
Of the 83 percent who support the concept, the perceived need for more parks and recreation space in the city ranks as the most important reason for support (40 percent). This is followed by 24 percent claiming that preservation of this land will benefit the environment and preservation of nature.
The results are encouraging however it is important that the City and Councillors hear directly from each and every person who supports this work.
83 percent of Haligonians can’t be wrong. This is the right thing to do.
